Sleep is a very important part of our life without which we cannot survive and also it is the main reason behind good health. As we all aware of the process of memory consolidation in which memory can be coded to retrieve it later. People recall their memories at one point and re-consolidation needed again do that it can be recalled again after some time. Without re-consolidation, it is not possible to retrieve the memories. It is the main factor behind our need of sleep but still there are some confusions t because it is difficult to understand the process through which sleep changes our learning behaviours of brain.
According to some researches, the phase of non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is as much important as REM phase. Normally dreams occur when we are in our REM phase which occupies 20-25% of total sleep that means we experience four or five periods of REM in one night. You must observe that you often wake up at night, so it is exactly after the REM moment. Now researchers have come up with a new thing that non-REM also plays a vital role in learning of brain. After a research on some students, it has been found that 90 minutes nap in afternoon and in evening between two heavy lessons lead them towards better performance in evening class.
This study proves that non-REM phase recharges the brain for learning so it is equally necessary for everyone. It also depends upon the amount of sleep and the performance after it. Walker is the lead researcher of this study and he thinks that old people have less non-REM moments due to which they have to face the less memory recall. Moreover, the people who are sleep deprived also face the reduced memorization capacity with lack of learning.
So we do need a good sleep of 7-8 hours and especially afternoon nap is very important because we feel fresh and energetic after it. Work is important but sleep deprivation due to overwork is not good for health. Our mobiles, laptops, other gadgets need to charge everyday, our mind is also a machine which needs charging and sleep is our battery.
